President James Madison Grave Marking - Montpelier September 17, 2003
Some
100 Compatriots, ladies of the DAR, members of the C.A.R., spouses and
significant others converged on Montpelier in Orange, VA, on Constitution Day,
September 17, 2003, to mark the grave of President
James Madison. It was the first time the SAR had recognized the patriot
service of Madison during the Revolutionary War. The program was the brainchild of Culpeper Minute Men
Chapter President Jim Bayne and quickly spread to the Virginia Society and the National Society.
Treasurer General Roland Downing of the Delaware Society and a dual member of the Col. Fielding Lewis
Chapter represented the National organization and delivered the memorial address. Other national
officers in attendance were Registrar General Chuck Bragg of Indiana (another CFL dual member),
Librarian General Dick Austin and Mid-Atlantic District Vice President
General Andy Johnson. NSSAR Executive Director Jim Randall also attended.
PHOTO BY JOANNE SAUER President Bob Bowen presented a memorial wreath, escorted by members of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Honor Guard.
